Doorstep Bench

The shoes are already by the door. Doorstep Bench is for the pair you will wear next: one that came in wet, one with a lace that will not hold, and the choice between the two in the morning.

Wet Shoes Tonight is what you do before the pair is put away. Laces and Soles is the broken lace, the peeling toe, and the insole that bunched. Tomorrow's Pair is which shoes are actually dry and which ones stay in the closet.

Each page finishes one job. A number on the page is an illustrative example unless you are copying it off your own shoe.

A Stone Still in the Tread

    By 04.08.202617.10.2026

You feel a click on the hard floor. You turn the shoe over. The faint, jagged edge of river rock peeks out between two thick rubber lugs, dull gray against the matte black tread of your right hiking boot. You’re still balanced on one foot outside your apartment unit, the left boot still laced tight…

Rest One Pair While You Wear the Other

    By 28.07.202617.10.2026

You wore the same shoes yesterday and the day before. The second pair is under the chair. You toe off your scuffed everyday sneakers right now, toes curling in the cool entryway air, and bend to grab the pair tucked under the hall chair. The rubber soles are still damp from when you ran through…

The Work Shoe and the Rain Shoe

    By 21.07.202617.10.2026

You need one pair for the office and the sky is already grey. Both pairs are in reach. You hook a finger through the loop of the rain shoe first, then pause, remembering your 10 AM presentation with the regional leadership team that expects business casual attire. A fat drop of rain hits the welcome…

Which Pair Is Actually Dry by Morning

    By 15.07.202617.10.2026

Two pairs are by the door. You press a finger into each toe box. The knit running shoes squelch a little under your touch, water beading at the seam where the upper meets the recycled rubber sole. The leather Chelsea boots are damp along the ankle cuff, no obvious wet spots lower down, but you…

Match a Replacement Lace to the Old One

    By 08.07.202617.10.2026

One lace is new in the package. The other is still on the shoe, faded. You prop the scuffed white canvas sneaker on the lowest step of your building’s entry, the one that always holds a faint smudge of bike oil even after heavy summer rain. The plastic lace package crinkles loud enough to make…

The Shoe That Squeaks on the Kitchen Floor

    By 02.07.202617.10.2026

Every step on the tile makes the same squeak. The other shoe is quiet. You shift your weight back and forth on your heels, testing the noise to make sure you didn’t imagine it, and sure enough, every time your left heel presses into the grout line, a high, reedy chirp cuts through the hum…

The Insole Bunched at the Heel

    By 25.06.202617.10.2026

Something thick is under your heel. You pull the shoe off to look. The crumpled edge of the insole juts up right where your Achilles presses, half peeled away from the shoe’s base, crusted with a faint dust of sidewalk salt from your walk home. You prop your hip against the Doorstep Bench, socked foot…

The Rubber Toe Cap Is Lifting

    By 19.06.202617.10.2026

You can slide a fingernail under the cap. It flaps when you walk. You’re still standing on your apartment mat, one boot propped on the lowest step of the Doorstep Bench, rain dripping off the heel onto the coir weave. You wiggle the edge of the rubber toe cap again, wincing when you see the…

A Double Knot That Still Comes Undone

    By 12.06.202617.10.2026

You tied it twice this morning. It was open again by lunch. You’re crouched on your entry mat now, prodding the crumpled lace end of this canvas low-top, rain spattering the toe where you darted through the drizzle ten minutes back. The other shoe’s knot sits tight, smooth, no fraying where it rubs against your…

    The Tongue Slid Sideways

    By 05.06.202617.10.2026

The tongue is under the laces on one side. The top of your foot is bare against the eyelets. You just jogged up three flights of stairs in the light drizzle that started halfway through your commute home, and you’d been consciously shifting your weight to your right foot the entire climb to keep the…
