Doorstep Bench

The shoes are already by the door. Doorstep Bench is for the pair you will wear next: one that came in wet, one with a lace that will not hold, and the choice between the two in the morning.

Wet Shoes Tonight is what you do before the pair is put away. Laces and Soles is the broken lace, the peeling toe, and the insole that bunched. Tomorrow's Pair is which shoes are actually dry and which ones stay in the closet.

Each page finishes one job. A number on the page is an illustrative example unless you are copying it off your own shoe.

The Spray That Did Nothing in Today’s Rain

    By 25.03.202617.10.2026

You sprayed these yesterday. The sock is still wet at the ankle. You’re propped against your Doorstep Bench, kicking off the pair one at a time, rain dripping off the toe caps onto the welcome mat you forgot to shake out last week. The spray bottle you’d paid $12 for sits on the entry shelf…

Two Wet Pairs and One Dry Patch of Floor

    By 19.03.202617.10.2026

Both pairs came in wet. There is one clear strip of floor by the window. You set your keys down on the low ledge of the Doorstep Bench first, the edge that never catches rain even in the worst downpours. The rain still drips off the hem of your rain jacket onto the doormat, and…

The Puddle That Filled the Toe Box

    By 12.03.202617.10.2026

Water sits in the toe when you look in. You have not stuffed anything in yet. Your sock squelches when you peel it off, leaving a wet ring on the doormat that bleeds into the frayed edge. The rest of this canvas pair is spotted but only damp, not soaked through, save for the left…

Pull the Boot Liner Out and Hang It

    By 05.03.202617.10.2026

The liner comes free in your fingers. The boot shell is still wet inside. Snow melts in a thin rivulet down the side of the rubber upper onto your welcome mat, and you brush a clump of half-frozen slush off the heel with your socked foot. You kick the other boot gently to loosen its…

A Canvas Sneaker That Smells After a Wet Commute

    By 27.02.202617.10.2026

You open the shoe and the smell is already there. The sock is in your hand. You’d walked three blocks through an unexpected downpour after the bus dropped you off, and the canvas soaked through before you could duck under an awning. The front doormat is still dotted with the puddles you shook off your…

Leather That Went Dark in the Rain

    By 20.02.202617.10.2026

The toe of the leather shoe is a shade darker than the heel. You have not put it away yet. The rain stopped 22 minutes ago, and you’d left the pair propped against the apartment building wall while you helped a neighbor carry a potted fiddle leaf fig up the stoop. Your right palm rests…

Knock the Mud Off Before the Hallway

    By 14.02.202617.10.2026

The tread is packed. The mat is one step inside the door. Your socks are still damp from the puddle you stepped through 20 minutes back, and you don’t want to track crumbs of clay all over the carpet your roommate just steam cleaned this morning. You shift your weight to your bare heel, one…

One Wet Shoe and One Dry Shoe

    By 07.02.202617.10.2026

Only the right shoe went into the puddle. The left one is merely damp at the toe. You hover on the threshold, keys still jangling in your hand, rain still dripping off the hood of your jacket onto the back of your neck. You don’t want to trail water across the entryway rug you spent…

Salt Lines on Winter Boots After the Walk

    By 01.02.202617.10.2026

A white crust sits on the leather above the sole. You are still in your coat. Your gloves are still tucked into your coat cuffs, the cold from the sidewalk still clinging to the hems, and the boots are still warm where your feet sat inside them ten seconds prior. The welcome mat under your…

Do Not Park Wet Boots on the Radiator

    By 25.01.202617.10.2026

The boot is dripping and the radiator is the warmest thing in the room. You stop before you set it there. You can still feel the slush from the crosswalk seeped through the tread gaps when you stepped off the curb 10 minutes ago. Illustrative example: That 0.2 mile detour through the unplowed side street…
